                                                           George Szirtes

Picture
George Szirtes was born in  Budapest in 1948, and came to England with his family after the 1956 Hungarian uprising. He was educated in England, training as a painter, and has always written in English. In recent years he has worked on translating Hungarian literature, producing editions of poets such as Otto Orban, Zsuzsa Rakovszky, and Agnes Nemes Nagy, and novelists such as Sandor Marai and Laszlo Krasznahorkai. He co-edited Bloodaxe's landmark anthology The Colonade of Teeth. His other Bloodaxe titles include Reel (2004), winner of the T.S Eliot Prize; New and Collected Poems (2008); The Burning of the Books and other Poems (2009); and his Newcastle/ Bloodaxe lectures Fortinbras at the Fishhouses (2010).
Szirtes has supported our efforts since early steps and showed admirable interaction concerning the process of translating Iraqi poems into English and is so generous in providing the translator with insights and advice; how the poems sound in English and where the meaning would take us. All respect and gratefulness from Co-Founders to his Unique commitment.
